Department of “Informatics” was established in 1969 under the name “Organization of machine processing of economic information”. In the same year was opened an eponymous program, in which began training the first class of 40 students.

In its development the program repeatedly changed its name to: “Organization and design of the economic information processing” (in 1976), “Social-economic information” (in 1983) and “Economic informatics” (in 1990). After the adoption of the updated state register of the university programs in 1997, UE-Varna began training of students in “Informatics” program from professional direction 4.6. “Informatics and computer science”. In 2018, the program “Informatics” was renamed to “Informatics and computer science”. The department of “Informatics” has started training students in two more bachelor programs – “Business information systems” (since 2007) and “Mobile and web technologies” (since 2018).

Since 2018, the department of “Informatics” has begun training students in two new master programs – “Mobile and web technologies” and “Information management in business”.

Currently, the department is the only one in the university, which administrates undergraduate, graduate and PhD programs in two professional directions: “Informatics and computer science” and “Economics”. The department administrates four bachelor programs – “Informatics”, “Informatics and computer science”, “Mobile and web technologies” and “Business information systems”, and five master programs – “Informatics”, “Mobile and web technologies”, “Information management in business”, “Business information systems” and “Computer science”. Lecturers of the department participate in the training of all other students in UE-Varna. The department also prepares PhD students in programs “Informatics” and “Application of computing in economics”.

Department of “Informatics” maintains a high quality of training in one of the most dynamic areas. In the department there are 19 full-time lecturers (incl. 2 professors, 6 associate professors, 8 chief assistant PhDs and 3 assistant PhDs).

The department stimulates students’ activities by conducting different events like a review of students’ creativity, programming contest, design competition, and internet blog competition. The department also prepares student teams for interuniversity programming contests.

The members of the department are among the most active in terms of participation in working groups in the university, for example: competitions for selection and supply of equipment, projects for websites and web design, development of project proposals on European and national programs, organization of online lectures and conferences, and etc.
